Acid base disturbances are indicators of serious underlying pathology, rather than being the pathology themselves. Arterial blood gas examination is a useful investigation in patients with suspected respiratory or metabolic disease and serial blood gas investigation can monitor the progress or treatment of the underlying disease. The blood gas should be considered in conjunction with the patient’s clinical condition.
